Winter’s Arrival: A Tanka

Photo by Maria Orlova on Pexels.com

fashionably late,
Winter shows up with Starbucks
in hand and vengeance
on her mind, dragging her ghosts
behind her, the wailing souls

of a cold blizzard
shrieking curses to the sky;
Winter settles in,
drinks her double-shot mocha,
and prepares to fuck shit up

There’s a blizzard-a-comin’! Winter, as she usually does, came busting through the doors with an agenda: Cause as much destruction as possible. My area could receive 13 inches of snow and winds upwards of 25mph tomorrow. Whether it actually happens remains to be seen. I’m not taking any chances, though, so the appointments I had scheduled for tomorrow are now canceled. If you need me, you will find me on my couch, curled up with a blanket and reading a book.

Today is Tanka Thursday! One of my favorite days of the week because if there’s one form of poetry I like almost as much as haiku, it’s tanka.

Today’s prompt was “fog.” But due to a series of unfortunate Facebook messages, my friend led me to believe the prompt was “ghosts.” So I wrote about ghosts.

That’s what I get for not checking for myself.

I’m not mad, though. I love writing about ghosts, so I’m going with it.
